Calycosa is a Los Angeles–based jazz and improvisational quartet featuring vocalist and flutist Aankha Neal, keyboardists Salenta and Qur'an Shaheed, and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. The group focuses on improvisation, blending jazz, ambient, soul, and experimental elements in performances rooted in the jazz tradition.  The name “Calycosa” reflects the essence of a native California flower, Gentiana Calycosa, highlighting its chalice-like shape. In botanical terms, the “calyx” is the outermost whorl of a flower, typically composed of sepals that protect the flower bud before it blooms. Like the flower it references, the group’s music emphasizes growth, openness, and organic development within Los Angeles’ vibrant and eclectic jazz and experimental scene.
